Ingredients

Instructions

  • Slice the onions: Start by peeling off the skin of your onions then slicing them into large slices(about ½ inch thick) and place them all in a large bowl.
  • Combine other ingredients: In a medium size bowl, add whisk the eggs and milk together. In another medium size bowl, add the GF flour.
  • Prepare the breadcrumbs: Super easy, just prepare these gluten free breadcrumbs (or you can buy them).
  • Pulse the panko and bread: In a blender or food processor, pulse the GF panko and gluten free breadcrumbs until they are fine and ready for coating the onion rings with. In the last medium sized bowl, combine the GF breadcrumbs and GF panko together with the spices.
Pro Tip: We pulse them together because GF panko is much larger and makes it hard to coat the onion rings if you don’t.
  • Assemble the onion rings: Start by dipping the onions one by one in the flour then the egg mixture then the breadcrumb mixture. Set aside on a large baking sheet to prepare for frying.
  • Fry the onion rings: In a large stock pot, heat the oil to 350 degrees. Once it has reached that temperature, Gently place the onions one by one into the oil to fry making sure to only do a few at a time so they don’t overcrowd. Fry for about 2 minutes or until golden brown then place on a paper towel liked baking sheet. Continue until all onion rings are fried.

Notes

Topping and Flavor Variations

  1. With classic blue cheese dressing: Enjoy these with classic blue cheese dressing.
  2. Make this into a blooming onion: Instead of rings, make this into a blooming onion by cutting it whole like a blooming onion before frying.
  3. Make them into straws for burgers or green bean casseroleInstead of cutting into rings, simply cut them into long straws before coating and frying.

How to store them

Storing – I recommend eating these hot and fresh. They don’t store well. However, if you must, refrigerate them and then give them a quick heat in your air fryer to retain as much crispiness as possible.
Freezing – You can freeze the onions rings before frying then remove them from the freezer and fry when ready to enjoy. We do this often and just keep them in our freezer in a gallon freezer bag. I have also frozen them after cooking then pop them into the air fryer when ready to enjoy like with the frozen ones at the store. Roughly 400 degrees for 4-6 minutes should do it.
