One of the worst food experiences is to bite into a soggy onion ring. Well, that isn’t happening here! We’ve created the ultimate, extra crispy gluten free onion rings with a secret ingredient. They are just as good as you remember from your favorite hometown cafe and in only 30 minutes. They are great on their own, with ketchup or blue cheese, or on top of your steakhouse style gluten free burgers.

Let me tell you why you will never need another gluten free onion ring recipe…

    • Authentic taste and texture:ย Since these onion rings are fried and not baked, you get the real onion ring taste and texture without the gluten! We also found that during recipe testing, the addition of the gf panko AND breadcrumbs makes them even crispier then onion rings that are made without it and use gluten free flour only.
    • Customizable: They are a super customizable and can be put on burgers, eaten on their own or even made into other things like a blooming onion! You can also make the rings into straws for our green bean casserole.
    • Convenient: Let’s face it, when we want junk food, we don’t want to have to wait around. I love that this recipe was developed specifically to be ready in under 30 minutes.

Get all the ingredients you need delivered right to your front door!

While you can get the ingredients from multiple grocery stores, I love using Hungryroot and have for over 2 years! They make getting delicious groceries (especially gluten free and dairy free) delivered right to my door. I have gotten all my gluten free pastas, even Jovial brand and yes, gluten free cheese filled TORTELLINI from Hungryroot. They also have great gluten free cookie dough, sauces and easy meals. It is the BEST service and something we use every month.

Here is my custom referral code: CHANDICEPROBST40 to use right here, which will give you 40% off their first delivery plus one free gift (their current offer is 30%, so this is the best offer out there!).

    Game changer ingredients to use

Extra Crispy Gluten Free Onion Rings (with a Secret Ingredient) Ingredients with names over the picture
    • Onionsย โ€“ Key ingredient obviously, but let’s talk about what you need to use to make them the turn out the best they can. I remember making these with red onions once and they came out looking so unappetizing. They just turn to a weird grey color. So, with that being said, I like BIG yellow onions best. The sweet onions are my favorite but white work as well.
    • Gluten Free Pankoย AND Breadcrumbsโ€“ Lots of people go the (gf) beer battered route for onion rings but I have found that those get soggy so fast. In my opinion, panko and breadcrumbs together is the SECRET combination that adds the extra crunch we all want! You can get gf panko HERE for only $3.
    • Flourย โ€“ I like to use an all-purpose gluten free flour blend. For best results, I recommend using an all purpose flour blend likeย King Arthurโ€™s gluten flour. It is made to mimic the taste and texture of regular flour, providing consistent results. If you do a lot of gluten free baking like I do, you canย make your own gluten free flour. Avoid using almond flour or coconut flour in this recipe as it will make the onion rings too dense or too crumbly.

    Let’s fry some onions!

onions being cut on a wood cutting board
    1. For easy onion rings, once you slice the onion, push the rings through the center. They should all come out easily in rings. If they arenโ€™t, flip the onion to the other side and try pushing from that side. One is always easier than the other.
flour and spices in a blender
    1. It’s time to pulse your gf flour and panko together. This is a must for the best texture.
gluten free onion ring ingredients on a table with milk being poured into a bowl with eggs
    1. You will be dipping the onions in a flour mixture first then into an egg & milk mixture then lastly the panko/breadcrumbs. So get each thing into it’s own bowl.
onion slice being dipped into flour to make onion rings
    1. Let’s give those onion a little gluten free flour dusting.
flour drenched onion slice being dipped into an egg mixture in a bowl
    1. Now it’s time to give them the egg bath then coat them with the panko breadcrumb mixture.
gluten free onion rings frying in a big pot of oil
    1. Fry them up to crispy perfection and enjoy hot! We found that using aย deep fryer or large potย works best. And make sure to use HOT oil, around 350-375 degrees.

I also love these gluten free (mostly fried) snacks!

Our gluten free soft pretzels are so good with cheese sauce or a generous serving of salt. This gluten free fried ravioli is always a show stopper and also extra crispy. I love making gluten free crispy rolled tacos with leftover chicken or beef for a taco shop experience. And of course, gluten free croutons are a nice crunchy topping to salad that isn’t usually gluten free.

    Ingredients

    • 2 large yellow onions
    • 4 large eggs
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1 cup gluten free all purpose flour
    • 1 cup gluten free panko
    • 1 cup gluten free breadcrumbs
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/8 teaspoon onion salt
    • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
    • oil for frying

    Instructions

    • Slice the onions:ย Start by peeling off the skin of your onions then slicing them into large slices(about 1/2 inch thick) and place them all in a large bowl.ย
    • Combine other ingredients:ย In a medium size bowl, add whisk the eggs and milk together. In another medium size bowl, add the GF flour.
    • Prepare the breadcrumbs:ย Super easy, just prepare these gluten free breadcrumbs (or you can buy them).
    • Pulse the panko and bread:ย In a blender or food processor, pulse the GF panko and gluten free breadcrumbs until they are fine and ready for coating the onion rings with. In the last medium sized bowl, combine the GF breadcrumbs and GF panko together with the spices.ย
Pro Tip:ย We pulse them together because GF panko is much larger and makes it hard to coat the onion rings if you donโ€™t.
    • Assemble the onion rings:ย Start by dipping the onions one by one in the flour then the egg mixture then the breadcrumb mixture. Set aside on a large baking sheet to prepare for frying.
    • Fry the onion rings:ย In a large stock pot, heat the oil to 350 degrees. Once it has reached that temperature, Gently place the onions one by one into the oil to fry making sure to only do a few at a time so they donโ€™t overcrowd. Fry for about 2 minutes or until golden brown then place on a paper towel liked baking sheet. Continue until all onion rings are fried.

    Notes

    Topping and Flavor Variations

    1. With classic blue cheese dressing: Enjoy these with classic blue cheese dressing.
    2. Make this into a blooming onion: Instead of rings, make this into a blooming onion by cutting it whole like a blooming onion before frying.
    3. Make them into straws for burgers or green bean casserole:ย Instead of cutting into rings, simply cut them into long straws before coating and frying.

    How to store them

Storingย โ€“ I recommend eating these hot and fresh. They donโ€™t store well. However, if you must, refrigerate them and then give them a quick heat in your air fryer to retain as much crispiness as possible.
Freezingย โ€“ You can freeze the onions rings before frying then remove them from the freezer and fry when ready to enjoy. We do this often and just keep them in our freezer in a gallon freezer bag. I have also frozen them after cooking then pop them into the air fryer when ready to enjoy like with the frozen ones at the store. Roughly 400 degrees for 4-6 minutes should do it.

Thank you! 3 years later, my husband can safely eat an onion ring!
I knew one day I’d find a recipe that make sense, and yours is it! Will I tweak it? Of course, that’s how I do things, but you provided that bones.
      Forever thankful.
