These gluten-free croutons have the perfect crunch with a yummy garlic flavor. This is an easy recipe that makes delicious homemade croutons.
Adding tasty croutons to a salad is a great way to spice up your salad. When you make your own croutons, not only will you have delicious salad toppers, but you will also have the satisfaction of having homemade croutons!
Croutons are key when it comes to a salad. When I was first diagnosed with celiac disease, I was bummed about a lot of things, but I was especially bummed that I couldn’t have croutons anymore. They are the best part of a salad in my opinion.
You can use croutons for a lot of things too! I love putting croutons in this Dairy Free Tomato Soup and Whole30 Butternut Squash Soup. They add the perfect crunch and flavor to creamy soups.
Another recipe these croutons are perfect for is our Red Cabbage Salad with Bacon. The crunch of the cabbage mixed with the croutons is absolute perfection.
I am all about throwing parties, and one thing I love to do is have a Salad Bar. It is great because everyone can add whatever they want and you don’t have to worry about picky eaters. I love putting these fresh croutons out on the display table because of course they are tasty, but also their golden brown color is beautiful.
Top tip: Package some of the croutons ahead of time so you can give them out when you are sending people home with leftovers! You can even use our gluten free garlic bread to make garlicky croutons.
What you need
It doesn’t take much when it comes to making homemade gluten-free croutons. Just some simple ingredients and an oven!
Gluten-free bread
Croutons are not stale bread. They are bread cubes cooked to perfection with yummy seasonings. You can season them depending on what type of salad you are going to use them in, like a caesar salad or this Hazelnut Oil Beet and Goat Cheese salad.
Whatever gluten-free bread you want to use is fine for this recipe. I love the Canyon Bakehouse brand, but there are tons of options out there. All that matters is that you get a whole loaf and cut it into one-inch cubes.
Seasonings
The seasons make or break croutons. This recipe has the perfect blend of garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, oregano, and salt for these delicious croutons. Fresh bread mixed with these seasonings makes the best croutons.
How to make it
- Preheat oven to 375ยฐF then line a large baking sheet with a non-stick silicone mat or parchment paper and set aside
- In a large bowl, drizzle the olive oil over the bread cubes and add oregano, basil, garlic powder, salt and pepper and toss gently to combine
- Spread the bread out in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet and bake until crisp and golden brown, turning once halfway through
- Remove from the oven, and let them cool completely then add to your favorite soup or salad
No, garlic powder does not contain gluten.
Caesar dressing is gluten-free. If it is homemade, you will want to double check before eating.
There are plenty of things you can use instead of croutons to top your salad. Some great options are nuts, seeds, chickpeas, coconut, kale chips, or any other crunchy thing you want. That’s the fun thing about making salads. You can do whatever you want!
You can either store them in an airtight container or in a plastic bag. They can be stored at room temperature and will last about a week. These croutons are best the first two days after cooking though.
