These cherry chip cookies are the sweetest, most delicious cookies. The cherry chips mixed with coconut flakes will curb your sweet tooth and have you reaching for seconds (or thirds).
Our cherry chip cookies are perfect for Valentine’s Day, Christmas cookie exchanges, or for an afternoon treat. They are perfect for any time of the year, honestly, and people will be begging for the recipe.
Cherry chip cookies have become my favorite cookie. Not only are they great tasting, but they are so easy to make. Plus, like our coconut macaroons without condensed milk, they have great coconut flavor!
I have enjoyed these cookies since I was a kid because my mom loved them as a kid. Here is what she had to say…
“There was a bakery in the town neighboring my hometown that my mom worked at. They made the best cherry chip cookies ever. Once in a while my mom would take us with her to pick up something and let us choose one treat.
I always chose a cherry chip cookie. Eventually, the bakery closed and it had been years since I’d had the delight of this cookie. I always checked in any new bakery I found to serif they carried them, with no success.
I came across a recipe several years ago that used cranberries, but tasted very much like the cherry chip cookies I remembered.
I converted it into a gluten-free version and now my life is complete (just kidding, but these cookies really do help). -Chandice’s mom, Tana
I think they are absolutely perfect with our red velvet cake mix cookies for a Galentines Day Cookie Decorating Party. Munching on them while decorating cookies sounds like a dream. Their red color and cherry flavor scream Valentine’s Day in my opinion.
If you like these cookies, you should definitely try out our Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip cookies , gluten free Oreo balls or our Gluten-Free Monster Cookies. Both are easy to make and absolutely delicious.
My kids love helping me make these cookies because of the fun cherry chips. They are used to chocolate chips, so the red cherry chips are exciting to them.
I usually have to buy an extra bag for them to munch on while we bake… The red are perfect for holiday cookies.
Here are some other easy Christmas cookie recipes with few ingredients. You can even try these hot chocolate cookies for a decadent treat.
What you need
One of the many things I love about this recipe is that it is super simple. There are only a few ingredients needed, making it an easy recipe.
Gluten-free all purpose flour
This recipe requires gluten-free all purpose flour and almond flour. Using both gives a light, fluffy, soft texture to your cookies and has a yummy taste. My favorite gluten-free flour is the King Arthur brand.
Baking with gluten-free flour can be overwhelming, so I wrote a whole post about it. My Gluten-Free Flour and Starches post has all of the tips and tricks when it comes to gluten-free baking. Don’t stress; you’ll be a pro in no time.
Almond flour
Almond flour is great for healthy eating as it is low carb. It also creates a moist and super tender dessert, so it is a win-win!
Eating healthy while still having yummy treats? Count me in.
Cherry chips
Cherry chips give a great cherry flavor without having to actually have maraschino cherries. Chopped cherries are yummy, but can make your cookies soggy. Maraschino cherry juice will also bleed, making the cookies not as pretty.
You can find cherry chips at your local grocery store. While you are out, you should grab some candy heart sprinkles to make these adorable Grinch Cookies. They are great, especially if you are making these chewy cherry chip cookies for a Christmas cookie exchange.
How to make them
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
- Using the bowl of a stand mixer or in a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and egg at a medium speed
- In another bowl, combine the almond flour, gluten-free all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder, then blend them slowly into the sugar butter mixture
- Fold in the cherry chips and coconut flakes
- Using a small cookie scoop, place dough balls on a prepared cookie sheet and flatten slightly with the back of a spoon
- Bake for 12 minutes until edges are golden brown
Top tip: Place cookies on a wire rack to allow them to completely cool.
Smaller scoops of cookie dough will help the cookies rise easier. You will also want to check if your baking powder is still good. Expired baking powder will keep your cookies from rising.
If your gluten-free cookies are not as moist as you would like, try adding and extra egg to the dough next time.
Allow the cookies to cool to room temperature before doing anything else. Then, place the cookies in an airtight container with parchment paper between each layer of cookies. Stacking them on top of each other will cause them to stick together.
If you need some more great cookies that have red in them, these heart jam cookies are a great choice!

Hi Chandice,
I had a great experience growing up in a small town of Vallejo, CA and also about cherry Chip cookies and trying to find a recipe that comes close to it. I’m going to try this one so thank you, for sharing.
Nicole
Chandice says
Hi Nicole, I love that story! I hope you love them.
Steven says
For a lot of cookies it’s recommended to refrigerate after making before putting into the oven because it effects the amount of spreading the cookie does , would you recommend it? Thanks
Chandice says
Not with these but you certainly can if you prefer…
Kathleen says
The batter is all powdery and doesn’t stick together. Is there something missing in the recipe?
Chandice says
They are a more dry cookie by nature but they should still come together and look like the photos dough. Did you do the full amount of butter and egg?
Wendy says
Can I use all regular All Purpose Flour instead of gluten free? Would it be the same equivalent of the GF and almond together?? Thank you
Chandice says
Yes you can totally use regular all purpose flour in place of the GF and almond flours ๐
Steven says
Wasn’t even aware there was such a thing as cherry chips let alone cookie’s but definitely going to give them a try, does it matter if the coconut flakes are sweetened or not? Thank you
Chandice says
You will love them! ๐ It is best if the coconut is unsweetened.
Gloria Webber says
I have Quinoa Flour, could I substitute the Almond Flour for that?
I also have Evans Cherries that I grew myself and dehydrated. I was thinking of subbing the cherry chips with those! I usually chop them up in tiny bits.
thanks
Chandice says
Hi Gloria, I LOVE the idea of putting your on dehydrated cherries in the cookies! You can simply use all purpose flour in place of the gluten-free and almond if you don’t have to be gluten-free. You can also just add extra GF flour in place of the almond flour if you are.
Tami says
What brand are the cherry chip? My grocery stores donโt carry them and I have to order them online. Also, can you make this recipe without the coconut flakes?
Chandice says
Hi Tami, the brand is listed in the recipe if you click cherry chips but here is the link as well: https://amzn.to/3Ravam8
I do think taking out 1 1/2 cup of coconut flakes would definitely make the recipe different.
Debbie says
Is there something I could use instead of the coconut flakes?
Chandice says
I would say probably not as that is a huge part of this recipe…sorry
Tami says
Thanks. I didnโt see the link before.
Chandice says
It wasn’t there, I just added it. ๐
