Going on cruises gluten free can be a very pleasant experience indeed. Enjoy food that is both safe and delicious while cruising the open seas. And don’t forget the sense of community you can feel as some cruises are actually designed for large gluten free groups and those with celiac disease.
Setting sail on a cruise is an exciting experience filled with all sorts of adventures and of course, yummy food! However, those with gluten allergies or celiac disease have to be extra careful navigating the food options on a cruise.
Fortunately, many cruise lines offer dedicated gluten free menus and options for those with gluten intolerances. In this post, we’ll dive into the world of gluten free cruising, highlighting gluten-free cruises and the gluten-free offerings available on popular cruise lines.
Popular Cruise Lines
There are several cruise lines that have recognized the importance of catering to passengers with food allergies, specifically gluten allergies. Here are just a few of the popular cruise lines that I would recommend for those with celiac disease…
Celiac Cruise
When it comes to gluten free cruises, Celiac Cruise has to be the best option out there. They’ve partnered with Royal Caribbean to bring you a worry-free, gluten-free cruise. All food options are guaranteed gluten free so you don’t have to stress about anything other than sea sickness!
Princess Cruises
Although Princess Cruise Line is not 100% gluten-free, they do offer gluten free options like gluten free pizza, pasta, and even a gluten free menu on some cruises. Princess Cruises also allow you to use their app to customize any food order and input any dietary restrictions.
Since Princess Cruises are not guaranteed gluten free, I recommend that you tell your server and/or double check with a staff member about each meal. And be sure to plan ahead by contacting the chef before you set sail.
Royal Caribbean Cruises
Not only does Royal Caribbean offer extravagant destinations, they also offer a wide selection of gluten free foods. While they have gluten-free options at every restaurant, they also have a gluten-free corner at every buffet.
Royal Caribbean recommends you inform a staff member or your waiter before each meal to ensure the food is gluten-free. I also recommend planning ahead by contacting the chef before you leave.
Norwegian Cruises
Similar to Royal Caribbean Cruises, Norwegian does an excellent job to ensure the safety of the passengers with food allergies. Along with gluten-free options on every menu, they have highly trained chefs who have expereience in accomidating to food allergies.
Norwegian recommends letting the cruise line know ahead of time about your dietary restrictions as well as letting your server know before every meal. They also make sure things are labels on the menus and buffets so you know which items are gluten-free.
Disney Cruises
Disney is another good option when it comes to gluten-free cruises, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Aside from being an overall kid-friendly cruise, Disney is able to accommodate to any major food allergy on their standard menus.
They also provide gluten-free options in every buffet and restaurant so you don’t have to worry. It is best to let your server know before each meal as well as the cruise line before setting sail about your dietary restrictions.
Carnival Cruises
Carnival Cruises are equipped with Menu Mate, which is a food ingredient program that is a safe and efficient way to cater to passengers with dietary restrictions. Carnival can not only accommodate to wheat allergies, but also other major food allergies.
Carnival also offers gluten free options on regular menus and buffets for passengers. Again, it’s best to let your server know before the meal about allergies.
Sailing Gluten Free
Overall, it can be challenging traveling and cruising when you’re gluten-free. Just like you would at home, it’s best to double check menus, ingredients lists, and let your servers know that about your food allergies.
Celiac disease does not have to get in the way of adventuring!
