This copycat Denny’s Moons Over My Hammy recipe is filled with two delicious cheeses, classic ham, scrambled eggs, and sourdough bread. It is a great breakfast sandwich with a memorable name that will make you smile.
Denny’s has been around for years and has a large breakfast selection. This hammy sandwich is one of their top secret restaurant recipes.
We make this copycat recipe for breakfasts on the weekends and we all look forward to it. Moons Over My Hammy is one of my favorite breakfast sandwiches, so I had to come up with a replica of Denny’s recipe.
If you haven’t heard of this sandwich before, it is basically an extra-fancy grilled cheese sandwich. It’s even better with a side of French fries and our Hawaiian slider rolls.
When I make this hammy copycat breakfast sandwich, I like to serve it with air fryer hash browns. Denny’s serves their sandwich with hash browns too, so it’s perfect!
A fun fact about this breakfast sandwich is that in the greater Miami-Dade area on Halloween in 2020, some Denny’s locations created a blue Moons Over My Hammy sandwich.
That Halloween there was a blue moon that has only happened in 1944 and won’t happen again until 2039. So for a limited time, you could get a blue sandwich to honor the blue moon.
Top tip: On Halloween morning, make the blue Moons Over My Hammy sandwich for your kids by dying the bread black!

What you need
This hammy breakfast sandwich is such an easy recipe and only has a few ingredients. And even though it is a clone recipe, it tastes just like the real thing.
Sourdough bread
For this recipe, you will need two slices of sourdough bread. You can either buy it at the store or make it at home.
We use gluten-free bread at my house because I have celiac, but regular sourdough bread works also.
If you are wanting to make your own sourdough bread, check out our Gluten-Free Sourdough Starter post and our Gluten-Free Sourdough Bread recipe.
Deli ham
You will need slices of ham for this hammy recipe. Pretty self-explanatory, right? Ham mixed with the cheese and eggs all inside sourdough bread is absolute perfection.
How to make it
- In a small bowl, whisk eggs and milk
- Heat a small non-stick skillet over medium heat with a teaspoon of butter
- Once the butter has melted, add the eggs and scramble until cooked through and no longer runny then season to taste with salt and pepper
- Remove the eggs and turn up the heat to medium then flash fry the ham slices for about 15 seconds per side giving them some color and warming them up (turn the heat back down to low when done)
- Butter one slice of bread and put it buttered side down into the skillet and top with one slice of American deli cheese, eggs, ham, the a slice of Swiss cheese and finally, another buttered slice of bread (you can also use a panini press which I highly recommend)
- Cook on low to low-medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes on each side or until the bread is golden brown, serve hot
When the sandwich was first created, it was served with two sunny-side up eggs on top of the slices of ham, which looked like two moons. Therefore, the famous moons over my “hammy.”
Yes! All you need to do is switch out the cheese for your favorite dairy-free cheese option (or go without the cheese). You will also want to use dairy free butter and a dairy free milk option.
Let the sandwich cool to room temperature, then wrap in plastic wrap or in a plastic bag. Keep in the fridge and eat within 4 days.
