This copycat Denny's Moons Over My Hammy sandwich recipe is filled with two delicious cheeses, classic ham, scrambled eggs, and sourdough bread. It is a great breakfast sandwich with a memorable name that will make you smile. Denny's hammy sandwich is one of their top secret restaurant recipes and now you can make it at home!

We make this copycat recipe for breakfasts on the weekends and we all look forward to it. Moons Over My Hammy is one of my favorite breakfast sandwiches, that I still remember eating when my grandma would treat me to a breakfast out as a kid. So I had to come up with a replica of Denny's recipe.
If you haven't heard of this sandwich before, it is basically an extra-fancy grilled ham and cheese sandwich but with scrambled eggs that gives it that breakfast edge. When I make this hammy copycat breakfast sandwich, I like to serve it with air fryer hash browns. Denny's serves their sandwich with hash browns too, so it's perfect!

What you need
This hammy breakfast sandwich is such an easy recipe and only has a few ingredients. And even though it is a clone recipe, it tastes just like the real thing.

Sourdough bread
For this recipe, you will need two slices of sourdough bread. You can either buy it at the store or make it at home. But it is a KEY ingredient for flavor. Check out our Gluten-Free Sourdough Starter post and our Gluten-Free Sourdough Bread recipe for making your own.
We use gluten-free bread at my house because I have celiac, but regular sourdough bread works also.
Deli ham
You will need slices of ham for this hammy recipe. Pretty self-explanatory, right? I will say that that Boars Head brand ham mixed with the cheese and eggs all inside sourdough bread is absolute perfection. It's the brand my mom used and I still love it!

Ok look how easy it is to make...
- The key is to start with a bit of butter in a pan then add the eggs and scramble until cooked through and no longer runny then season to taste with salt and pepper. As Ina Garten would say, keep it low so the eggs cook correctly and don't discolor.
- Once the eggs are done, you can turn up the heat to medium then flash fry the ham slices for about 30 seconds per side giving them some color and warming them up (turn the heat back down to low when done).
- Yes, more butter! Time to butter one slice of bread and put it buttered side down into the skillet and top with one slice of American deli cheese, scrambled eggs, ham, the a slice of Swiss cheese and finally, another buttered slice of bread (you can also use a panini press which I highly recommend)
- Cook on low to low-medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes then flip and do another 1-2 minutes until the bread is golden brown. Perfection!
Pro Tip: All you need to do to make this dairy free is switch out the cheese for your favorite dairy-free cheese option (or go without the cheese). You will also want to use dairy free butter and a dairy free milk option.
