This ginger beer mocktail is a simple, yet incredibly flavorful drink made with non-alcoholic whiskey, ginger beer, lime juice, and a touch of mint. It’s the perfect drink for sipping on a warm summer day or adding touch of sophistication to your evening.
This drink is not only fun and easy to make, but also very satisfying. The zesty ginger kick and bright limey tang will have everyone pouring another glass. Enjoy all the fun of a cocktail without any of the alcohol or negative effects.
As someone who doesn’t drink alcohol but enjoys crafting a good mocktail, I understand the importance of having a wide range of alcohol-free options. Whether your pregnant, the designated driver, or simply choose not to drink, a good mocktail is a great way to spice up the evening or feel included.
This Kentucky mule recipe is one of my favorites because I’m a huge ginger fan! Ginger can be used in so many different recipes like this gluten-free gingerbread or in this gingerbread martini mocktail. It’s so refreshing and is also packed with tons of health benefits.
The fresh lime juice and fresh mint in this drink really tie it all together for a seamless, yet effortless, beverage. This drink truly works for everything from special occasions to back yard barbecues.
Why you’ll love this virgin kentucky mule
- You can whip this mocktail up in minutes with no mixology skills.
- A crowd-pleaser for all ages, this recipe is perfect for special occasions or simple family gatherings.
- It’s refreshingly zesty with a kick of ginger in each sip.
- Let’s face it, life is better with a fun drink in your hand!
What you need
- Non-alcoholic bourbon – I like to use 0.0% ABV (alcohol by volume) bourbon or whiskey. You can find these online or in some grocery stores.
- Ginger beer – The ginger beer gives this non-alcoholic drink its ginger flavor. It is made out of ginger spice, yeast, and sugar. Ginger beer is sold at most grocery stores. The Fever Tree brand is always my go-to because it has a strong ginger flavor but use whatever you have on hand.
- Lime juice – Freshly squeezed lime juice is an easy way to elevate this drink but you can also use prepackaged lime juice.
- Mint – Fresh mint leaves are great for garnished and add that extra touch that takes this drink from good to great.
How to make a ginger beer mocktail
Step 1: Add the liquid
Add the bourbon or whiskey to a glass (or copper mug) along with freshly squeezed lime juice.
Step 2: Get icy
Fill the cups with ice cubes and top with ginger beer.
Step 3: Top it all off
Garnish the glass with a wedge of lime and a sprig of mint. If you’re feeling fancy, you can dress the rim of the glass with lime juice and salt.
Pro tip: Use a pretty cocktail glass to step up your drink game. You can also use copper mugs, whichever you prefer!
Variations
- For a hint of sweetness, you can add simple syrup or maple syrup to your delicious mocktail.
- If you like spicy things, feel free to throw in a dash of hot sauce, jalapeno slice, or some chili powder.
- Some muddled berries or citrus slices are the perfect addition for a fruity twist.
Can you replace ginger beer with ginger ale?
Yes you can replace ginger beer with ginger ale in mocktail recipes. However, it’s important to note that ginger ale is sweeter and milder while ginger beer has a stronger, more complex flavor.
If you do make the swap from a ginger beer base, you’ll have less of a “real ginger flavor” but you can balance this by adding more lime juice or using a less sweet ginger ale.
Does ginger beer contain alcohol?
Nope! You might think that ginger beer contains alcohol since it’s fermented, but the process of making ginger beer is actually closer to apple cider than actual beer. This makes ginger beer perfect for mocktails and other fun recipes. If you want to shake things up, you should try spicy ginger beer or other varieties.
What’s the difference between a Moscow mule and ginger beer cocktails?
A Moscow mule mocktail and a ginger beer cocktail are basically the same thing, just with different bases. Both have fresh ginger root flavor and a minty notes, but the Moscow mule contains vodka while ginger beer uses bourbon or whiskey. To make a virgin moscow mule, you’ll just need to replace the vodka for non-alcoholic vodka.
