    Simple Syrup Recipe (Easy!)

    March 3, 2022 By Chandice | 16 Comments | Updated March 3, 2022

Simple syrup in a glass bottle with a gold lid

In just 5 minutes you can have this classic simple syrup recipe. It is perfect for making mocktails or adding some moistness to baked goods!

The simplicity of simple syrup makes it one of the best recipes. It has many uses and can easily be used as is or imparted with flavors like lavender, orange and strawberry.

Simple Syrup Recipe in a glass jar with gold lid

This sweetener is simple but perfectly sweet. It’s a great addition to cocktail recipes, mocktails, iced coffee, and even baked treats! I love adding this rich syrup to these mocktail recipes…

    • Candy Cane Christmas Mocktails
    • Virgin Margarita Mocktail
    • Fresh Raspberry Mocktail
    • Non-alcoholic Gin and Tonic
    • Virgin Strawberry Margarita

Simple syrup is also a great topping on my gluten-free rhubarb crisp with peaches. It’s a great substitute for maple syrup or honey syrups on sweet treats.

Honestly, this syrup tastes great in any hot or cold drinks! Iced tea, hot chocolate, iced coffee, cold brew, and even lemonade! It’s such great way to sweeten drinks because all it takes is a couple tablespoons.

What is simple syrup made of?

This simple syrup recipe is made from two basic ingredients you probably already have! One part sugar and one part water, that’s it! There is equal parts water to sugar so it’s super easy to make a double batch or half batch.

This recipe calls for white sugar and I wouldn’t recommend substituting for brown sugar or an artificial sweetener. You won’t get the same result or the same taste.

However, we have a GREAT Brown Sugar Simple Syrup recipe that has a more caramel flavor which I love for fall drinks especially.

Can you make flavored simple syrups?

Yes! It’s actually super easy to make flavored syrups. I like adding flavored syrups to fun flavored mocktails! Here are a few of my favorite flavored simple syrup recipes…

    • Peach simple syrup
    • Orange simple syrup
    • Lavender simple syrup
    • Strawberry simple syrup
    • Raspberry Simple Syrup
    • Rose Simple Syrup
    • Blueberry Simple Syrup
    • Blackberry Simple Syrup
    • Rosemary Simple Syrup
    • Jalapeno Simple Syrup

What can be substituted for simple syrup?

There are a bunch of different sweeteners that can be substituted for simple syrup. Swap out maple syrup or honey syrup for this sugar water in coffees and other cold beverages.

Use this simple syrup to sweeten easy recipes or even drizzle on gluten-free pancakes!

Simple Syrup Recipe being made with water being poured in

Is simple syrup the same as liquid sugar?

Simple syrup is the same thing as liquid sugar. Sugar syrup is made with an equal ratio of sugar to water which allows it to easily dissolve in drinks. It’s a must for any home bartender as it’s needed for almost any type of cocktail or mocktail!

What you need to make it

    Sugar

One cup sugar is perfect for this old fashioned simple syrup recipe. To keep this recipe simple, white or cane sugar works best.

    Water

One cup water cooked with one cup of sugar is the perfect ratio for this rich simple syrup! Doesn’t get any easier than that.

Simple Syrup Recipe being made in a pot with wooden spoon

    How to make it

Making rich syrup is surprisingly easy! All you have to do it whisk together equal parts water and sugar then boil. Sugar dissolves easily into hot water so another key step is allowing the sugar water to cool.

How do you store simple syrup?

You can store simple syrups in a mason jar, glass bottle, or another airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Your simple syrup will last up to 2 weeks at room temperature or 1 month refrigerated.  Once it starts to get cloudy or discolored, it is no longer good.

    Strawberry Simple Syrup

    April 2, 2021 By Chandice | 1 Comment | Updated April 18, 2022

Strawberry Simple Syrup in a glass jar

Our 3-ingredient strawberry simple syrup is perfect for mocktails and drinks as well as for adding flavor to and making cakes more moist!

Strawberry Simple Syrup in a glass jar

I love the fresh summer flavor of this sweet strawberry simple syrup. While I love adding a bit to my favorite strawberry mocktail like in this Valentines mocktails roundup, it’s also great for a fruity splash in our classic non-alcoholic gin and tonic.

I even love to combine it with some club soda, ice, cream our rose simple syrup for a fruity and floral flavored Italian soda. Or you can add it to steamed milk for a comforting, 2-ingredient drink.

Add some rosemary simple syrup for an herbal sweet infusion… Or, go full desert with a drizzle over this no bake strawberry pie!

It’s also great for making cake layers more moist like in this delicious strawberry cake recipe from my friend Liz at Sugar Geek Show.

    Strawberry Lemonade

Who doesn’t love a good strawberry lemonade right? It is so easy to combine this recipe with blackberry simple syrup in our blackberry lemonade recipe or just swap it out entirely for a refreshing and super easy summer drink!

And if you want to get uber easy, just add a bit to store bought lemonade. Costco has a great bottled one that I love.

    Fresh or Frozen Strawberries

This recipe can be used with either fresh or frozen strawberries. I do personally love using fresh but frozen works just as well and it is much easier if you are making it during the winter months.

These other recipes can also be made with fresh or frozen fruit…

    • Raspberry Simple Syrup
    • Blueberry Simple Syrup
    • Blackberry Simple Syrup
    • Peach Simple Syrup

    How to make it

    • Add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar to a pan and whisk well

    • Pour syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a glass bottle, making sure to push down the pulp as you strain

    Strawberry Mocktails

I love making these in the summer when berries are fresh and in season. You can add a splash of our strawberry simple syrup to any of these recipes for a fun variation.

    • Mimosa Mocktail
    • Lavender Lemonade
    • Prosecco Drink
    • Non-Alcoholic Moscow Mule

    Lavender Simple Syrup

    April 2, 2021 By Chandice | 5 Comments | Updated March 3, 2022

Lavender Simple Syrup in a glass jar

This liquid lavender sweetener is a lovely sweetener that make Italian soda or milk steamers fresh and floral. It is fantastic for adding to layers of a cake for extra flavor and texture as well.

Lavender Simple Syrup in a glass jar

I love using lavender like I use our rose simple syrup. I enjoyed the best steamer in Portland at Kyra’s Bakeshop years ago. It was just slightly scented with lavender and had the smooth touch of creamy milk.

After that, I started seeking out lavender drinks, desserts and basically anything I could find. I realized that with a base like this, you can add it’s flavor to so many things. Here are some of my favorite things to add it to…

    • Steamers
    • Hot chocolate
    • Mocktails
    • Lavender lemonade
    • Lavender frozen lemonade
    • Cakes and cupcakes
    • Macaroons
    • Icecream
    • Tarts
    • Jams and jellies

I also love adding a splash to our blackberry lemonade or Valentines mocktails to take it to another level. And you can even add it to a frozen pineapple margarita (that can easily be made into a mocktail) or in this healthy green smoothie for a floral touch.

Using it in our non-alcoholic gin and tonic or non-alcoholic mimosa mocktail gives it a feminine touch that really makes a great mothers day or special girls night drink.

Water added to sugar in a pot

What you need to make it…

With just few things and a couple of minutes, you can make this floral sweetener.

    We use the following ingredients…

    • Water
    • Sugar
    • Dried edible lavender buds

Yep, that’s it! It’s really more simple than you think. The water and sugar should always be equal parts.

    How to make it

    • Add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar to a pan and whisk well
    • Add 1 tsp dried, edible lavender buds

Pro Tip: Make sure the lavender is food grade and edible.

    • Pour syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a glass bottle
Lavender Simple Syrup in a strainer

What’s the best way to use it?

As I mentioned, I love using it in so many different ways. From making a soft and subtle lavender steamer to a classic lavender Italian soda, this syrup works amazing in so many drinks.

It is also a fantastic ingredient for making lavender cakes and cupcakes more moist. Simply brush on baked cake layers or cupcakes before icing. You will love the added flavor and texture!

    How do you store it?

It can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator, whichever you prefer. You can use a glass or plastic container just be sure the simple syrup is cooled before pouring in if you are going to use plastic.

    Blackberry Simple Syrup

    March 31, 2021 By Chandice | 2 Comments | Updated March 3, 2022

Blackberry Simple Syrup in a glass bottle with berries around

This blackberry simple syrup, is so versatile! It is the perfect balance of sweet and tart. It only takes a few minutes to make and can be used for mocktails and drinks as well as cakes and dessert.

Blackberry Simple Syrup in a glass bottle with berries around

I love how fresh and fruity this simple syrup is. It is perfect for making blackberry lemonade with sage. It is also fun to make blackberry jalapeño lemonade using it and our jalapeño simple syrup.

I first had it years ago at Melting Pot and fell in love. I couldn’t believe a drink could have so much flavor! I knew I had to recreate it at home.

While I started by making it with store bought syrup, I found that it really only took a few extra minutes to get a fresher version with this homemade blackberry syrup.

I also love adding it to our non-alcoholic mimosa mocktail and non-alcoholic gin and tonic for a bit of sweetness and a touch of fruity/tartness.

    Fresh or Frozen Blackberries

This tasty blackberry syrup recipe can be used with either fresh or frozen blackberries. I do personally love using fresh organic blackberries but frozen works just as well and it is much easier if you are making it during the winter months.

These other syrup recipes can also be made with fresh or frozen fruit…

    • Raspberry Simple Syrup
    • Blueberry Simple Syrup
    • Strawberry Simple Syrup
    • Peach Simple Syrup
    • Orange Simple Syrup

    Ingredients you will need

With just few simple ingredients and a couple of minutes, you can make this delicious simple syrup recipe that is sweet with just a hint of tart fruit.

    We use the following ingredients…

    • Water
    • Sugar (I like organic sugar)
    • Fresh Blackberries

Yep, that’s it! It’s really more simple than you think. The water and sugar should always be equal parts, but if you want thicker syrup you can use less water. The fruit is usually 1.5X the water and sugar you use.

    How to make it

    • Add 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar to a medium saucepan and whisk well until the sugar dissolves
    • Add 1 1/2 cups of fresh blackberries
    • Bring to a boil (medium-high heat) whisking occasionally then remove from heat and let steep for 45 minutes
    • Pour syrup through a fine-mesh sieve or strainer into a glass jar or large bowl, making sure to push down the pulp as you strain
Blackberries being poured into a strainer

What do you use simple syrup for?

Simple syrup like this and our rosemary simple syrup or brown sugar simple syrup are so versatile. They can be used in so many things!

    • Brushing on cakes
    • Drizzling on ice cream
    • To make mocktails
    • Added to lemonade
    • As a flavoring in hot chocolate
    • Flavoring for steamers
    • Added to club soda and cream and served in a mason jar to make italian sodas

    and so much more!

    Blackberries in a strainer

How do you use it in and on cakes?

Simple syrup makes cake extra moist, especially when doing a layer cake. Simply brush it onto the top of each cake layer before frosting.

You can easily add it to our eggnog cake for a bit of fruity blackberry flavor. For a 12 inch cake, you will use roughly 1/4 cup simple syrup.

    How do you store it?

Simple syrup can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator, whichever you prefer. You can use an airtight container (glass or plastic), just be sure the simple syrup is cooled before pouring in if you are going to use plastic.

This fruit syrup has a shorter shelf life, but you can keep it for 1-2 weeks at room temperature or about 1 month in the refrigerator. Once it starts to get cloudy, discolored or moldy, it is no longer good.

    Orange Simple Syrup

    March 23, 2021 By Chandice | 2 Comments | Updated March 18, 2022

Orange Simple Syrup in a glass jar

This adds a citrusy sweet touch to any drink, baked goods or even frosting! Plus it only requires three ingredients.

You can prepare it for a quick, citrusy drink or mocktail then save some for making that chocolate orange cake extra moist.

Orange Simple Syrup in a glass jar

This sweetener is tart and fruity. It is a great addition to anything you are making, baking or drinking. I especially love to add it to these mocktails…

    • Non-alcoholic mimosa mocktail
    • Prosecco drink
    • Blackberry lemonade
    • Non-alcoholic gin and tonic
    • Lavender lemonade
    • Grapefruit mocktail

It’s also a lovely touch when splashed into our Thanksgiving mocktails or crockpot apple cider and is the perfect way to add flavor to ice cream. I’ve even used it on french toast in place of boring old maple syrup.

Another interesting use for this homemade orange syrup is in an orange vinaigrette salad dressing. Normally you would use orange juice or orange zest, but using this syrup would give it some extra flair.

Water added to sugar in a pot

    Can I use any sugar?

Any sugar can be used for this orange simple syrup recipe. From plain white sugar to cane sugar to coconut sugar and date sugar to raw sugar, they all work great!

You can even give this recipe a go using our brown sugar simple syrup instructions for a bit more of a warm caramel flavor. Or get floral and fruity by combining it with our rose simple syrup!

    What ingredients you will need

With just few things and a couple of minutes, you can make this delicious and fresh sweetener with just a hint of citrus.

    We use the following ingredients…

    • Water
    • Sugar
    • Fresh orange

    How to make it

    • Add 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar to a medium saucepan and whisk well until sugar dissolves.
    • Add 1 fresh sliced orange, no need to remove the orange peels or the white pith
Oranges being put into a pot
    • Bring to a gentle boil on medium-high heat, whisking occasionally then remove from heat and let steep for 45 minutes
    • Pour syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a glass bottle, making sure to push down the fruit as you strain
    • Let the mixture cool before using or storing your bottle of orange simple syrup
Orange Simple Syrup being poured into a strainer

And that’s it! Equal parts sugar and water with some oranges, a super easy way to make your own simple syrup at home.

What type of oranges should I use?

Any orange from the grocery store works great but cara cara are one of my favorites. Blood oranges are much more rich in color and provide a bit of different orange flavor. Valencia and Jaffa also work great!

    How do you store it?

It can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator, whichever you prefer. You can use a glass or plastic container just be sure it is cooled before pouring if you are going to use plastic.

Does it need to be refrigerated?

Simple syrup does not need to be refrigerated. It handles well at room temperature.

Orange Simple Syrup fruit segments in a strainer

How long do infused blends last?

You can keep infused blends like our rosemary simple syrup for 1-2 weeks at room temperature or 3 weeks to a 1 month in the refrigerator. Once it starts to get cloudy or discolored, it is no longer good.

This simple syrup recipe can be made with either fresh or frozen blueberries (like we do in our razzleberry pie or many of these 30+ blueberry Thanksgiving desserts). I do personally love using fresh but frozen works just as well and sometimes it’s just the easier option.

These other recipes can also be made with fresh or frozen fruit…

    • Raspberry Simple Syrup
    • Blackberry Simple Syrup
    • Strawberry Simple Syrup
    • Peach Simple Syrup
    • Orange Simple Syrup

Does it matter what kind of water I use?

Not at all. Tap water or filtered work equally as well. Just don’t use any carbonated water like club soda or seltzer.

    How to make it

    • Add 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar to a medium saucepan and whisk well
    • Add 1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries
    • Bring to a gentle boil on medium-high heat whisking occasionally then remove from heat and let steep for 45 minutes
    • Pour syrup through a fine-mesh strainer into a glass bottle, making sure to push down the fruit pieces as you strain
Blueberry Simple Syrup being poured into a strainer

What’s the best way to use this?

I love using it to make cake extra moist, especially between cake layers when doing a layer cake. Simply brush it onto the top of each cake layer before frosting.

I also love adding a splash to any of these mocktails for a little blueberry touch. You can easily swap it out for other fruit flavors in drinks that have others.

    • Valentines mocktails
    • Non-alcoholic mimosa mocktail
    • Prosecco drink
    • Blackberry lemonade
    • Non-alcoholic gin and tonic
    • Lavender lemonade
    • Grapefruit mocktail

It is also fantastic as a topping for ice cream or in a simple blueberry Italian soda with ice, soda water and cream. You can even use it as pancake syrup, on your French toast or for dipping glazed blueberry donuts.

Blueberry Simple Syrup cooked blueberries in a strainer

    How do you store it?

It can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator, whichever you prefer. You can use a glass or plastic airtight container just be sure to let the syrup cool before pouring if you are going to use plastic.

Does it need to be refrigerated?

Simple syrup does not need to be refrigerated. It handles well at room temperature.

How long do infused blends last?

You can keep infused blends like our rosemary simple syrup and this for 1-2 weeks at room temperature or 3 weeks to a 1 month in the refrigerator. Once it starts to get cloudy or discolored, it is no longer good.

    Peach Simple Syrup

    March 18, 2021 By Chandice | 4 Comments | Updated September 16, 2022

Peach Simple Syrup in a glass jar

Peach simple syrup is everything that summer tastes like and can be added to mocktails, lemonade, Italian sodas, baked goodies, and even drizzled on vanilla ice cream. It is easy to make and so versatile!

So when you have extra summer peaches, or even when you don’t you can grab some frozen peaches to whip up this natural summer sweetener.

Peach Simple Syrup in a glass jar

To me, the official flavor of summer is peach. It is sweet yet fruity and a bit juicy. This sweetener adds a touch of that to anything you are making, baking or drinking. I especially love to add it to these mocktails…

    • Non-alcoholic mimosa mocktail
    • Virgin margarita
    • Non-alcoholic pina colada
    • Prosecco drink
    • Blackberry lemonade
    • Non-alcoholic gin and tonic
    • Lavender lemonade
    • Grapefruit mocktail
    • Strawberry Mocktail
    • Virgin Mojito Recipe
    • Starbucks Pink Drink Recipe

You can also make a simple peach Italian soda by adding a tablespoon to large glass with ice, soda water and a splash of cream. You can also drizzle it over peaches and cream for a delicious and fresh dessert.

Water added to sugar in a pot

    Can I use any sugar?

Any sugar can be used for this recipe. From cane sugar to coconut sugar and date sugar to raw sugar, they all work great!

You can even give this recipe a go using our brown sugar simple syrup instructions for a bit more of a warm caramel flavor. Or get floral and fruity by combining it with our rose simple syrup!

Does it matter what kind of water I use?

Not at all. Tap water or filtered work equally as well. Just don’t use any carbonated water like club soda or seltzer.

    How to make it

    • Add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar to a pan and whisk well
    • Add 1 1/2 cups of fresh or frozen peaches
Peaches in sugar water being stirred with a whisk
    • Bring to a boil whisking occasionally then remove from heat and let steep for 45 minutes
    • Pour syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a glass bottle, making sure to push down the fruit as you strain

Uses for the leftover sugar peaches

Be sure to save those peaches! They are so delicious and can be used in a variety of other ways including in our gluten-free rhubarb crisp with peaches. Here are some of my favorites…

    • Over icecream
    • Topping for gluten-free pancakes or gluten-free waffles
    • Made into the easiest freezer jam
    • Added to a peach Italian soda
    • Served with cottage cheese or homemade ricotta like you can find on Mamma Mangia
    • Simply served with whole cream drizzled over top

I love this recipe because it’s really two in one. This and the sugared peaches. Yum!

    Brown Sugar Simple Syrup

    March 17, 2021 By Chandice | 2 Comments | Updated March 3, 2022

Brown Sugar Simple Syrup in a glass jar

This brown sugar simple syrup is the perfect amount of sweet and caramel flavor. It is perfect for sweetening mocktails and drinks.

Brown Sugar Simple Syrup in a glass jar

This warm and sweet syrup is one of my favorite sweeteners. It is so versatile and can be used for a variety of things.

I also love adding a splash to our lavender lemonade or blackberry lemonade to take it to another level.

Using it in our non-alcoholic gin and tonic or non-alcoholic mimosa mocktail gives it a warm winter or fall touch that really makes for a fun take on a classic drink.

The whole reason I wanted to create this recipe is because I had the best brown sugar hot chocolate and wanted to find a way to recreate it. Since non-liquid sugar doesn’t work as well in drinks and can come across as gritty, I knew a simple syrup was in order.

I highly recommend trying it in any of these drinks and mocktails:

    • Warm milk steamers
    • Gingerbread martini mocktail
    • Hot cocoa with brown sugar
    • Non-alcoholic White Russian
    • Crockpot apple cider
    • Brown sugar milk tea
    • Thanksgiving mocktails
    • Brown sugar lemonade
    • Thanksgiving mocktails
    • Succulent baby shower cucumber lime mocktail

What sugar is best for simple syrup?

While you can use brown sugar like we do here, you can also use cane sugar, raw sugar or coconut sugar. All of them work great with equal parts water.

Water being put into a glass cup

    What is it made of?

It couldn’t be more SIMPLE. The flavor is warm, sweet and with a subtle taste of molasses and comes from only TWO ingredients…

    • Water
    • Brown Sugar

Yep, that’s it! It’s really more simple than you think. The water and sugar should always be equal parts.

This recipe also work so well with coconut sugar that also has that caramel flavor and date sugar works too!

    How to make it

    • Add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of brown sugar to a pan and whisk well
    • Bring to a boil whisking occasionally then remove from heat and let steep for 10 minutes
Water being poured into a saucepan with brown sugar

This spicy yet sweet jalapeño simple syrup is perfect for taking some of your favorite drinks like our non-alcoholic margarita mocktail or non-alcoholic vodka dirty martini to a new, savory level.

Jalapeño Simple Syrup in a glass jar

I wanted to create this recipe because my sister always talked about these amazing jalapeño margaritas. She said they are such a great balance of spicy and sweet.

Since non-liquid sugar doesn’t work as well in drinks and can come across as gritty, I knew a simple syrup was in order for getting that great jalapeño flavor.

I highly recommend trying it in any of these drinks and mocktails:
